About us

Welcome to The Black Room

We created The Black Room to solve a problem we experienced
first-hand within Film and Television Art Departments.

After working across productions for companies including Disney, Apple TV+, and ITV, we saw how difficult it could be to source artwork for screen.

Finding the right piece was only part of the challenge —
securing permissions, usage rights, approvals, and logistics often became a
time-consuming and expensive process.

Productions were expected to move quickly while dealing with
unclear licensing, damaged rental stock, restrictive usage terms, collection
logistics, and the constant pressure of changing schedules and reshoots.

In many cases, what Art Departments requested was simple:
high-quality, production-safe digital artwork that could be downloaded
instantly, adapted creatively, and used with complete confidence.

So we built it.

Our platform brings together original artwork from a diverse range of artists in one curated, production-ready collection.

Built for Art Departments

The Black Room was designed specifically for the people shaping visual worlds on screen — Set Decorators, Art Directors, Scenic Artists, Prop Masters, Production Buyers, and Creative Teams working across Film, Television, and Commercials.

Every piece is professionally digitised using high-resolution photography or scanning to ensure exceptional print quality for on-screen use.

We work alongside specialist print houses and industry professionals across the UK to better understand the operational realities of production — from artwork sizing and print specifications to licensing, confidence and clearance requirements.

The result is a platform built around the pace and demands of modern production.

Fully cleared artwork. Instantly ready for screen.

all rights are pre-cleared directly with the artist.

Production-Ready Licensing

Every artwork on The Black Room includes clear, transparent licensing information upfront, including pricing, permissions, and usage rights, allowing productions to source artwork quickly and confidently.

Our agreements have been developed alongside art clearance professionals and entertainment legal specialists, giving productions confidence that every artwork is licensed for professional screen use.

No rights chasing. No licensing uncertainty. No last-minute legal complications.

Just artwork that is ready for screen.

trusted by design

The Black Room is built to meet the needs of film and television productions.

Every artwork is supplied under clear, legally reviewed licensing terms, supported by Professional Indemnity and Cyber Liability insurance, giving productions confidence that they can source artwork quickly, securely and with clarity over usage rights.

Production design requires flexibility, and we believe artwork should support creativity — not limit it.

Creative Freedom Without Restrictions

The Black Room allows productions to resize, recolour, adapt, distress, or creatively modify artwork to suit the needs of a set without the pressures of rental returns, damage concerns, or additional negotiations.

We built the platform to support the pace, creativity, and problem-solving that Art Departments deal with every day.

At The Black Room, we believe every empty space is an opportunity for storytelling.

Creativity Without Limits

Whether you’re designing a contemporary apartment, building a cinematic world, dressing a television set, or creating the perfect visual atmosphere for a scene, we’re here to make sourcing artwork seamless,
efficient, and creatively unrestricted.

The Black Room was born from a deeply personal place.

The Story Behind The Name

From the Founder:

“For nearly 40 years, my sister lived with a lifelong illness. In the final years of her life, she lost her sight. Yet for my 40th birthday, I asked her for something no amount of money could buy — a painting.

Despite everything she was facing, she created one.

Today, that painting hangs in my office as a reminder that
creativity can exist even in darkness.

That possibility remains, even when
everything feels against you.

The Black Room was built on that same belief —
that creativity knows no boundaries.

As a quiet tribute to my sister, you’ll notice the ‘K’ in ‘Black’ is slightly lowered within our logo.

Her name was Katherine.”

The Black Room exists to celebrate creative resilience, support artists, and give productions the freedom to create without
limitations.
