How to Submit Your Work

Artwork Submission Guidelines

Thank you for joining The Black Room.

To ensure your artwork can be reproduced to the highest possible standard for film, television, streaming, and commercial productions, all submissions must meet the following requirements.

Preparing Your Artwork

1. Create a Professional Digital File

Artwork must be supplied as either:

  • A professional high-resolution scan; or
  • A professional high-resolution photograph suitable for print reproduction.

The quality of the digital file directly affects the quality of the final printed artwork used on screen, so professional capture is strongly recommended.

2. Scanning Your Artwork (Preferred)

Where possible, professional scanning is the preferred method as it captures the greatest level of detail and colour accuracy.

A reputable UK scanning provider is Data Repro.

Professional scanning is generally suitable for:

  • Paper-based artwork
  • Illustrations
  • Prints
  • Thin card-mounted work

Please note that scanning is not suitable for:

  • Framed artwork
  • Canvas artwork
  • Heavily textured pieces
  • Sculptural or three-dimensional work

3. Professional Photography

If your artwork cannot be scanned, it should be professionally photographed.

Photography should be:

  • High-resolution
  • Evenly lit
  • Colour accurate
  • Suitable for large-format printing

Images must not contain:

  • Frames
  • Visible edges
  • Shadows
  • Reflections
  • Glare
  • Background distractions

The artwork should appear clean, flat, and ready for reproduction.

File Requirements

File Format

  • JPEG (.jpg)
  • 300 DPI minimum
  • 600 DPI preferred where available

File Size

As a general guide, files should typically be between 10MB – 50MB. File size may vary depending on artwork dimensions and capture method.

Image Quality

Files must be:

  • Sharp and in focus
  • Correctly exposed
  • Free from compression artefacts
  • Suitable for professional printing

Naming Your Files

Each artwork must have a unique title. Please keep titles concise and searchable, ideally between 1–3 words.

Examples:

  • Summer Sky
  • Golden Light
  • Red Horizon

If your artwork forms part of a series, use sequential numbering:

  • Sunset 1
  • Sunset 2
  • Sunset 3

The file name must exactly match the artwork title submitted on your Artwork Submission Form. The Black Room reserves the right to amend artwork titles where appropriate.
